In keeping with their ongoing purpose to inspire the world, Thomas Nelson continues to encourage the nurses at Special Kids to provide excellent services to families and children with medical needs. In 2011, Thomas Nelson gave $25,000 and committed another $50,000 to the Special Kids Skilled Nursing Program over the next two years. These funds will enable Special Kids to help families who may not have insurance coverage for nursing services.
“Parents of medically fragile children face a myriad of problems,” said Chris Truelove, Executive Director of Special Kids. “It is our passion to help ease the difficulties for these parents by providing a safe and loving environment without the typical high costs of medical care. This is only possible through the help of our community and wonderful supporters like Thomas Nelson who are willing to step in the gap and make it possible for us to continue meeting the needs of these families.”
Special Kids’ Skilled Nursing Program offers solutions by providing expert nursing care and educational enrichment in order for children with complex medical conditions to lead normal lives. When a child is ineligible for typical daycare due to special medical needs, or when a child comes home from the neonatal ICU or inpatient hospitalization, parents must provide direct care around the clock. It is difficult for them to coordinate multiple therapies and medical appointments while holding down a job. The Skilled Nursing Program helps ease this stress by enabling parents to continue working while knowing their child is in a safe place where they can grow and learn.
“When we [Thomas Nelson] met the Special Kids staff and learned about their mission, we were immediately struck by their sincerity, passion, dedication, and effectiveness for reaching children and families in dire need of medical assistance,” said Lisa Stillwell, Senior Editor of Gift Books at Thomas Nelson. “We believe that helping Special Kids is a powerful and lasting way to extend the love Jesus Christ has for special needs children, both physically and spiritually.”
Thomas Nelson continues to strive toward their mission to ‘inspire the world’ alongside Special Kids by bringing real-life change for families and children in need in middle Tennessee.
